8 steps to cultivate a happier mind

As human beings, we all seek happiness. We all want to avoid painful experiences and to look for ways to bring happiness into our lives. But happiness is different for everyone. What makes one person happy may not be the same for another, because we each have unique characters and preferences that stem from our different families, communities, and cultures. At the end of the day, your definition of happiness is personal.

Developing a “Happy Mindset” is where the pursuit of becoming happier needs to start otherwise happiness remains just an event that is short lived, not consistent and definitely not a lifestyle.

When do you think the power of a happy mindset is essential?

Carol Dweck, a world-renowned Stanford University psychologist, talks about the power of our mindset, especially around challenge. There are two kinds of mindsets: fixed and growth. Most people lean toward one or the other, whether they realize it or not.

If you are coming from a fixed mindset you have a tendency to see things in black and white. It is either success or failure. You believe that you either are or are not good at something, you stick with what you know to keep up your confidence, you also believe trouble is devastating and you could let failures define you.

However, if you are coming from a growth mindset, you consider life as a set of opportunities to learn and to grow. You believe that anyone can be good at anything, because of one’s abilities and actions, you tend to keep up your confidence by always pushing into the unfamiliar, for you failure is a temporary setback and trouble is all about growing and learning.

Here are 8 steps to nurture a growth mindset and become happier:

  • Spend your time with the right and positive people: You are the sum of the five people with whom you spend the most time. So choose your friends carefully
  • Challenge your thoughts: Your mind is a wild place, ask yourself are the thoughts flooding my brain making my situation better or worse? Are they even true?  Often when people are caught up in their “wild minds”, they get stuck in a loop thinking about the past, or worrying about the future. Being present for this moment can open many doors.
  • Meet growth, remember we are what we repeatedly we do, immerse yourself in personal growth content every day, it will change the language of your mind.
  • Imagine the best version of yourself: Forward thinking will move your focus away from where you don’t want to be to where could be.
  • Be appreciative towards others, this will strengthen your relationships and connections.
  • Emotional mastery: Emotions are our inner compass; they give us essential information about which direction to head toward.
  • Redefine failure by valuing your mistakes and lessons learnt.
  • Treat yourself kindly: If you have a friend who spoke to you the same way you speak to yourself, how long would that relationship last? If you don’t love who you are, then no one else will.
